Lung Test for Smokers

Between February 2004 and March 2007, 561 smokers over 35 years old had a lung function screening test as part of the Step2quit research study.

The tests were done as part of a research study in to how the lungs are damaged by smoking and the effect of giving information to smokers in different ways. Half of the smokers were given their results as ‘lung age’ the other half were given their results as raw data. Everyone was encouraged to quit smoking irrespective of results or group.

A letter confirming the results was sent by a doctor to each person.

The tests were repeated after 12 months and the numbers in each group who had successfully quit smoking were compared.

There were no experimental drugs involved.
